Temporary Suspension of the Green Pass Requirement at the Entrance to the European Parliament
On the 5 November, the President of the General Court of the European Union temporarily suspends the imposition of the EU digital Covid certificate for accessing the buildings of the European Parliament. Members of the European Parliament (MEP), members of staff or visitors will be able to access the Parliament premises with a negative self-test.
Since 3 November 2021, a valid EU digital Covid certificate has been required to access any of the European Parliament premises in its three workplaces (Strasbourg, Brussels and Luxembourg). This applies to all, irrespective of their status, be they elected Members of the European Parliament (MEP), members of staff or visitors.
This controversial decision was publicly denounced by several MEPs last week, as it constitutes a dramatic precedent within the EU, especially in Belgium where the Covid pass is not required in the workplace.
Considering that this obligation constitutes a serious violation of fundamental rights and freedoms, several MEPs as well as EP staff Members have decided, in close cooperation with the leading Belgium – based non-profit organisation ASBL Notre Bon Droit, to take this decision to court.
The Court’s decision on the summary proceedings is expected by the end of the year. It could decide to permanently suspend the decision while the actions for annulment are examined.
